CBD Benefits

(this article was written and taken from Dogs Naturally Magazine)

CBD (cannabidiol) is a compound found in cannabis.

The CBD found in most pet supplements is actually sourced from hemp. Hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant.  But, and this is an important point, hemp is not the same as marijuana. Hemp has very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), whereas marijuana has very high levels of THC … but hemp is higher in CBD, the substance that actually provides the therapeutic effects.

The THC is what produces psychoactive effects. CBD for pets should have 0.3% or less THC and will produce no psychoactive effects.

Bottom line: CBD Products will not get your pet buzzed or stoned.

So, if CBD oil won’t give your dog the munchies, what will it do? And why are so many pet owners using it to help their dogs?  Let’s find out!

Treating 4 Common Conditions With CBD Oil

Dogs have the same endocannabinoid system (ECS) as humans. This system is made up of a bunch of receptors.

Your dog has two types of receptors in his body:

  • CB1 receptors – located in the brain, nervous system, glands and organs
  • CB2 receptors – located in the regulatory cells of the immune system

CBD works by targeting ECS receptors, restoring balance when things are out of whack. That’s why it’s so good for so many different ailments.

These are our top 4 favorites.

Keep in mind that even though we’re only listing four health issues here, CBD can help with many specific conditions. Even if your dog’s ailment isn’t listed here, CBD still might be beneficial.

#1 Relieving Pain and Inflammation

Relieving pain and inflammation is the most popular benefit of CBD for dogs.

Pain can be a symptom of many types of health conditions. While inflammation is part of the healing process, it can increase pain or discomfort.  Luckily, studies show that CBD can suppress and even interrupt the pain signals in your dog’s brain. This can help alleviate both acute and chronic pain.

But it not only interrupts those pain signals, it can also reduce the inflammation that causes the pain in the first place.

Here are just some of the common health problems that cause pain that CBD oil can help with:

  • Arthritis
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Cancer
  • Sprains and strains
  • Torn ligaments
  • Recovery from surgery

Most conventional veterinarians will recommend drugs like NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) for these conditions. These conventional drugs can have adverse effects. Very few side effects have been reported with CBD (most side effects are mainly due to sensitivities). Instead, studies show that replacing those conventional meds with CBD oil is much safer for your dog.

#2 Anxiety and Stress

If your dog suffers from separation anxiety, you’re not alone.

But leaving your dog at home for the day is not the only thing can stress your dog out.

Dogs can develop these feelings from loud noises like fireworks or a faulty smoke alarm. Sometimes being in a crowded area or riding in a car can be stressful for a dog.

How can you tell if your dog is stressed? Here are some typical signs to look for:

  • Not eating or reduced appetite
  • Digestive issues (diarrhea or constipation)
  • Behavioral changes – keeping to himself, more aggressive towards people or other dogs
  • Excessive panting, shaking or licking

Whether your dog’s stress is situational or a regular behavioral issue, CBD for pets might help.

Studies show that CBD can help produce anti-anxiety effects.

Researchers haven’t quite figured out why yet, but it’s believed that serotonin levels play a role in helping reduce anxiety.

#3 Obesity Issues

Obesity is not only a problem for humans.

Many dogs are overweight and it’s very unhealthy for them. As dogs gain weight, they are at risk for many other health concerns:

  • An overweight dog will have more stress on his joints.
  • With excess weight, your dog is more likely to develop a heart condition.
  • Obesity can increase your dog’s chances of developing cancer.
  • Dogs can get diabetes just like humans, and obesity raises this risk.

The standard advice is to give your dog the proper amount of food and exercise. This is good advice, and it works in most cases.

What you might also want to do is start using CBD.

But let’s be clear: CBD is not a fat burning supplement for dogs.

Research shows that CBD can help promote weight loss and control appetite. Researchers have found that CBD can help break down fat in an indirect way.

CBD can also be beneficial in getting your dog moving more. Overweight dogs with joint pain are less likely to want to go on a walk. The pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD can help your dog be more active.

#4 Skin Conditions

If you have a dog who’s licking and scratching himself all the time, he might have a skin condition or allergies.

Dogs can be allergic to something specific or they can suffer from a chronic disease. So they either have problems when they come into contact with an allergen, or they have a chronic disease like atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is better known as eczema, and it’s a common skin disease in dogs. The cause is usually hereditary.

There are various treatments currently available, but most skin allergies are difficult to resolve. So the next best thing is to heal the affected skin, and try and reduce the number of symptoms.

Traditional treatments like corticosteroids can be effective in managing skin conditions in dogs. But these steroid hormones have some nasty side effects. If you have to treat a skin condition for your dog’s entire life, this is not a good option.

The good news is that CBD can help.

Studies have concluded that CBD can help relieve itchy and dry skin. It can also promote the growth of healthy skin.

Because CBD is very well tolerated, it can be a better long-term option in treating your dog’s ongoing skin problems.

Researchers have said that CBD could be a key ingredient in future skin medications.

What’s great about the pet products available right now is that you can buy balms and sprays, not only oil. You can apply these products right on the problem areas.

Research

Research Study On CBD And Pet Pain

There are limited research studies on CBD and pain treatment for animals. The few studies available also suggest that more research is needed. However, these studies do show encouraging early findings.

Last year, Cornell University released the first medical hemp veterinary study from a major teaching hospital. Researchers from their College of Veterinary Medicine found the dogs in the study showed a decrease in pain and increase in activity during their four-week CBD treatment. The dog owners did not report any side effects in their pets, suggesting that CBD is safe for animals to use.

A recent study from Japan, published in Pet Behavior Science, also suggests that CBD has promise for treating seizures in dogs.

Two other research studies on CBD and animals are currently in the works. Cornell University is working on a similar study around CBD oil and felines. Colorado State University is examining CBD oil use to treat seizures and anxiety in dogs.

Possible Side Effects of CBD in Dogs

While there’s no scientific data on the side effects of CBD usage for dogs, there are potential side effects based on how CBD affects humans.

  • Dry mouth: Research has shown that CBD can decrease the production of saliva. For dogs, this would manifest as an increased thirst.
  • Lowered blood pressure: High doses of CBD have been known to cause a temporary drop in blood pressure. Even though the drop is small, it might create a brief feeling of light-headedness.
  • Drowsiness: Dog owners have used CBD to treat anxiety. The calming effect of CBD can also cause slight drowsiness, especially when using higher doses.

Risks of Using CBD Oil for Dogs

The safety and risks of using CBD for dogs have not yet been researched. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved CBD and has not issued a dosing chart. Therefore, we do not know what size dosage would be toxic. Any medication or supplement carries the risk of a reaction. It is always advisable, when giving your dog something new, to start out with small amounts and then closely monitor the effects. And always check with your veterinarian first.

Ingredients

Why Emu Oil?
The fatty acid profile in emu fat is nearly identical to our skin cell's profile. It helps to heal adverse skin conditions better than any plant based product. It out performs aloe vera or lavender oil when applied to burns. It is usually more effective than conventional medications such as cortisone at reducing inflammation and related pain. The fatty acids in emu oil (Omega 3 and Omega 6) increase the production of hormone-like substances called eicosanoids in our bodies to help heal skin and reduce inflammation. As it penetrates thru all 7 layers of skin, the fatty acids cause an anti-inflammatory effect. It actually reaches deeply into the joints or muscles to relieve pain associated with this inflammation.
Emu oil will carry substances much deeper than other methods, literally into the bloodstream according to studies.  This is the type of emu oil that is studied for its beneficial effect and the only type Red Dog Products uses in its products.
